Audi TT RS 8S

8S (Mk3)2016–2023

Five cylinders, 1-2-4-5-3, in the smallest shell Audi ever wrapped around them.

A lighter aluminium five, about 400 hp and no manual: the TT RS at its fastest and its last.

The 8S is the TT RS with the engine rebuilt around an aluminium block. DAZA kept the 2.5-litre displacement and the 1-2-4-5-3 firing order but shed roughly 26 kg from the nose, gained dual injection, and made about 400 hp. On the lighter MQB platform that turned the TT RS from a quick coupe into a car that could embarrass much more expensive machinery off the line.

Mechanically the recipe is unchanged: transverse five, seven-speed S tronic, Haldex clutch at the rear axle. The manual is gone. Eight-piston front calipers, an optional fixed-rate RS suspension in place of magnetic ride, and OLED tail lights were the headline hardware.

How it drives: enormous traction, enormous noise, and a front end that still does the steering and most of the driving. It is more agile than the 8J because there is less weight over the nose, but it remains a car you aim rather than balance. The engine is the event, and reviewers say so almost without exception.

Where it places in the lineage: the end of it. Audi stopped building the TT in 2023 with no successor, and the run-out editions closed the book on the five-cylinder coupe.

Known quirks

S tronic only — no manual was offered in any market. Audi rated US cars at 400 hp for the 2018 model year and 394 hp from 2019, with no change to the engine. European cars gained a petrol particulate filter from 2019 (engine code DNWA), which mutes the exhaust slightly. The steel front brakes are the known weak point under repeated hard use; carbon-ceramic fronts were the factory answer. Still nose-heavy and still Haldex, so it understeers at the limit like the 8J. The rear seats are for luggage.
