Honda Civic Type R FK8 vs Honda Civic Type R FL5
“Same K20C1 turbo four, same six-speed, same front-drive recipe — the FK8 is the fake-vented, 20-inch firebrand, the FL5 the grown-up who quietly does everything a bit better.
The FL5 takes the chassis: reviewers feel a stiffer, roughly 15% more rigid shell, a wider track, a front diff that no longer plows on throttle, and corner-exit traction Zygrene calls outrageous. Its shifter linkage is better again, the NVH lower, Comfort mode genuinely comfortable on 19s instead of tyre-busting 20s, and the overheating the FK8 was known for is engineered out.
The FK8 keeps a few cards: sharper throttle response below about 4,000 rpm where the FL5 shows more turbo lag, straight-line pace Throttle House rates quicker, and steering that several drivers — Throttle House, carwow, JayEmm — still prefer for its linearity and connection.
One is the rawer, sweeter-steering original you can now buy used; the other is the better car on almost every axis that isn't nostalgia.
you want the more linear, talkative steering and the crisper response below 4,000 rpm, you love (or don't mind) the boy-racer styling, and the used-market price matters more than the last word in chassis polish.
you want the sharper all-round car — more rigidity and front-end traction, a diff that won't push wide, a better shifter, lower NVH, a properly compliant Comfort mode on 19s, and no overheating on track days.
Buy the FK8 if steering feel and throttle crispness are what you drive for and you'd take its styling and stiffer, tyre-hungry 20s in exchange. Buy the FL5 if you want the better chassis, the better daily, and the more mature car — it beats its predecessor almost everywhere except steering and low-rev snap.
Steering and outright pace are the real splits. Throttle House, carwow and JayEmm prefer the FK8's steering — more linear, more 'hooked into the road' — while NoEqual found the FK8 numb and rolly next to the FL5. On pace, Throttle House calls the old car quicker in a straight line and Kyle Liong notices more turbo lag in the FL5, yet carwow says the new one puts its power down better and feels more responsive.
Performance
“With my car, there's much better throttle response below like 4,000.”
Handling
Fun to drive
“The bit of it though that I'm struggling with is the steering because this was a highlight in the old fk8... here though in full plus r mode yeah it weights up a lot and it's on occasion quite fun when you try and return it to Center though it kind of resists you.”
“The gear changes are also fantastic cuz they also improved the transmission. It's the same transmission, but they changed the linkage. And this is even better than the last one.”
Daily drivability
“The old car, the FK8, had 20s and that was actually pretty problematic. People were busting tires and bending wheels left and right.”
